Getting Started With Sheep Herding
Your dog needs to pass a herding evaluation test to determine drive and trainability. You and your dog are brought into a small pen with sheep and the instructor. Most dogs immeidately charge and chase the sheep, but the tester will attempt to modify the chase into a constructive herding behavior. If the dog is able to accomplish this, then the test is considered successful and you will be invited to begin herding lessons with your dog.
Sheep Herding Lessons
Herding lessons are 30 minute, private sessions and we train YOU to work your own dog. You will be taught how to use the stick and your body to encourage your dog to work sheep properly. Sheep behavior is explained to provide a better understanding of WHY the dogs have to work a particular way. Careful attention is paid to the breed of the dog, as loose-eyed dogs work differently than strong-eyed dogs. Our expertise at Action K9 Sports is in preparing clients and their dogs for competition. Competition is not mandatory but is such great FUN so we encourage all of our students to participate. Lessons are by appointment only.
